Carefully crafted around its natural environs high on the jungle-clad Sayan Ridge, Hartland Estate is a breathtaking 5-bedroom villa just outside Bali’s cultural capital of Ubud. Elegant and charming, Hartland Estate is a true hidden gem.
Much thought went into designing Hartland Estate, as the owner wanted to ensure that the villa was not only a luxurious hideaway, but that it also exhibited a healthy respect for and oneness with the environment. Thus, he used buried teak logs to custom-build the gorgeous wooden suites and furniture, natural stone in the beautiful bathrooms, and living plants and trees for fencing. The open-plan design allows for breezy natural ventilation (although the suites also have air-conditioning), and the 26-metre infinity pool is naturally warmed by the sun. The result is a glorious garden sanctuary in sync with nature, yet also offering the utmost comfort and contemporary conveniences such as Wi-Fi, satellite TVs, and a team of professional staff to provide warm, personalised service.

Carefully crafted around its natural environs high on the jungle-clad Sayan Ridge, Hartland Estate is a breathtaking 5-bedroom villa just outside Bali’s cultural capital of Ubud. Each aspect of the villa was designed to integrate seamlessly with its spectacular surroundings from the traditional Javanese-style suites constructed from reclaimed teak wood to the salt water infinity pool fed from a natural spring, and the vast decks offering incredible views of rice paddies, the river valley, and distant mountain peaks. Elegant and charming, Hartland Estate is a true hidden gem for those looking to immerse themselves in Bali’s beauty.
Hartland Estate has two breezy dining rooms where guests can gather for gourmet meals and sundowner drinks. The main dining pavilion has a fully-equipped modern kitchen and an open-air dining room with a round wooden table. The second dining area is located on top of the pool house and has a smaller kitchen and a long wooden table that offers incredible views across the river to the rice fields and lush green slopes of the ravine. The pool house below was designed with beautiful stones from Sumba and has a shower, bathroom, and dressing room.
Hidden away in its own private setting, the master suite at Hartland Estate is housed in a traditional Javanese joglo with a huge veranda that looks out to the river, rice paddies, and on clear days the distant mountains and all the way to the ocean. Soft sofas make for the perfect sunset perch, and the outdoor dining area is a lovely breakfast spot. Inside there is a canopied queen bed made up with crisp linens and Indonesian textiles, and a magnificent ensuite bathroom with a rain shower and bathtub. The master suite also has a kitchenette and private access to the pool.
The Teak House at Hartland Estate is fronted by a tranquil koi pond and has plenty of space to sprawl out both indoors and out. A large veranda offers outdoor dining and sunset views, while inside there is a queen bed and ensuite bathroom with a shower and bathtub. Next to this is Marian’s Cottage, a colonial-style bungalow with two bedrooms. Perfect for families with children, this building has a larger bedroom with a queen bed, a smaller room with a double bed, two bathrooms, a kitchenette, and al fresco areas on the front veranda and back porch. The Java House is set back next to the organic vegetable garden and plant nursery, and it has a double bed, a kitchenette, and an semi-open-air garden bathroom.
With such a spectacular setting, outdoor living is the norm at Hartland Estate. The 26-metre salt water infinity pool is a prime gathering spot, as it offers fabulous views across the river valley from both the huge curved ironwood deck and the water. A stroll through Hartland Estate’s beautifully manicured grounds offers surprises at every turn with unique features like an orchid house, herb garden, pretty ponds, and two fan-cooled meditation bales perched on the slopes of the ridge.
