Capella Ubud is considered one of the most unique hotels on Bali. Designed by architect Bill Bensley, it takes inspiration from 19th century explorers in Southeast Asia. The property features luxurious tent-style accommodations built into the terraced landscape. Each “tent” has a private saltwater pool and is outfitted with antiques, Indonesian artefacts, and modern conveniences. The resort also has a lounge, two restaurants, a spa, a community pool, and a campfire area. It seems blissfully remote, but in actuality, Ubud is just a 15-minute drive away.
The ambiance is pure zen at Tirta Ening Residence, a 4-bedroom property awash in tranquil water features. Floating pavilions are surrounded by shimmering ponds, an infinity pool mirrors the tropical foliage, and waterfalls cascade into pools, creating a calming effect. The residence is part of the award-winning COMO Shambhala Estate, a holistic wellness retreat where guests can undergo bespoke wellness programmes that include soothing spa treatments, hydrotherapy, yoga classes, meditation sessions, healthy whole cuisine, and more.
The main living and dining pavilion at Tirta Ening Residence spans an impressive 113 sqm and has open-sided spaces that allow for views of the lush gardens and forested ravine. Luxe touches like hand-carved doors and Chinese antiques add a chic ambiance. Inside there is also an air-conditioned library and elegant study with its own ensuite bathroom. Cross a stone bridge over the pond and you reach the covered lounge area surrounded by water and fragrant frangipani trees.
The COMO Shambhala Suite is the jewel of Tirta Ening Residence with over 90 square feet of space and a stunning Japanese water garden with a private waterfall that tumbles 25 metres into a pond. This suite also has a king-sized bed, private Jacuzzi, outdoor shower, and a huge bathtub carved from a single rock. Mod cons include complimentary Wi-Fi, individually controlled air-conditioning, satellite TV, and a private bar.
The three Terrace Suites at Tirta Ening Residence are relatively the same size, ranging between 63 sqm and 68 sqm. Each features either a king or queen bed, smooth polished wood floors, and huge sliding cgass doors complemented by curtains and roll-down screens for privacy. The suites also have private ensuite bathrooms with rain showers and luxe COMO bath products.
The main pool is the focal point at Tirta Ening Residence, as it looks out over the jungle ravine and offers plenty of space to spread out on the surrounding wooden sundecks. The loungers are perfectly positioned to catch the sun, and can be moved if guests want to create a space for outdoor dining and entertaining. Guests at the estate also have access to the resort’s main pool, gym, sauna, and steam rooms, and are welcome to sign up for activities such as cycling, river rafting, rice field walks and water purification ceremonies.
Price from USD$4,000 per night.
COMO Shambhala Estate is near Ubud, which is a 20-minute drive from this bustling artists’ town towards the centre of the island. Life is village-based, relaxed and largely rural, the landscape made up of rice paddies, distant volcanoes and forest, with COMO nestled in a clearing above a jungle-covered gorge beside the River Ayung. The Estate is a 90-minute drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport.
