Bali’s Top 5 Diving and Snorkelling Spots

There’s no disputing that Bali has some of the best diving and snorkelling sites in all of Southeast Asia. In fact, how could it not being an island surrounded by warm, nutrient-rich tropical waters? From dramatic drop-offs to colourful coral gardens, schools of exotic fish and beguiling shipwrecks, the underwater world here is almost as vibrant as the unique culture and vistas you find on land. Although there are countless spots where you can get your aquatic kicks, we’ve narrowed down a few that stand out from the rest.

Pulau Menjangan – West Bali National Park

Pulau Menjangan is still one of Bali’s best underwater destinations. It sits inside the island’s only national park, making the waters clean and protected. Stick close to shore for colourful coral gardens filled with sea fans, sponges, and parrotfish. For deeper thrills, dive the nearby 30-metre wall. You might see manta rays, reef sharks, and even whale sharks.

Base yourself in Pemuteran, just across the water. It has guesthouses, local eateries, and plenty of dive operators offering trips to the island.

Tulamben – USS Liberty Wreck

Tulamben is perfect if you enjoy wreck diving. The highlight here is the USS Liberty, a U.S. WWII freighter sunk offshore. It lies just 30 metres from the beach, so you can dive or snorkel from the shore. The wreck teems with marine life like bumphead parrotfish, eels, and nudibranchs. For a unique experience, try a night dive.

Stay in nearby Amed, or come from Lovina or Candidasa for a day trip.

Nusa Lembongan – Manta Rays & Reef Life

The north coast of Nusa Lembongan offers shallow reefs full of tropical fish. You can also spot turtles, reef sharks, and the rare mola mola (sunfish) between July and October. It’s a great place to learn to dive or improve your skills. Many PADI-certified schools operate here with experienced instructors and excellent safety records.

Nusa Penida – Deep Dives for Experienced Divers

Ceningan Wall, between Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan, is one of the world’s deepest natural sea channels. Strong currents bring in cold water and rare sea life, like octopuses, barracuda, and leopard sharks. This site is only for advanced divers due to the powerful currents. If you’re new to diving, ask your guide for a safer alternative nearby.

Gili Trawangan – Dive Schools & Freediving

Gili T continues to attract diving fans with its lively vibe and clear waters. Numerous dive schools offer courses for all levels. You’ll find turtles, reef sharks, and vibrant coral reefs close to shore. If you want a different experience, try a freediving course. Freedive Gili teaches you how to hold your breath and dive to 15 metres—no tanks or snorkels required.

Safety Reminder

Always check sea conditions before heading out, especially around Nusa Penida, where currents can be strong. Choose certified dive operators with good safety practices.
