A stepping stone path over a lotus pond leads you directly into Villa Hamsa’s stunning living pavilion with its high vaulted ceilings, signature walls made out of Bengkirai wood blocks, and sliding glass doors that open to a huge veranda overlooking the gardens, pool and ocean. The cool air-conditioned interior has plenty of places to relax including retro rattan chairs and oversized cream-coloured sofas in front of chic cabinet housing a 42-inch TV and Sonos stereo system. To one side there is a beautiful dining area with a marble-topped table surrounded by eight armchairs.
Along the side of the living pavilion there is a set of stairs that leads down through a semi-subterranean passageway to the guest suites, then another spiral staircase that descends to a secluded garden. Here you will find an air-conditioned gym housing a treadmill, cross-trainer, stationary bicycle and a weights bench. The gym also has huge glass windows that look out to the garden and the ocean, which makes for a scenic workout session. Next to the gym there is a serene spa with two massage tables and a shower.

Spacious and stylish, this elegant abode features a soaring merbau wood ceiling, a huge emperor bed made up with crisp white linens, and a sofa that can double as a child’s bed. The edge of the terrace borders the pool and merges into the sun deck, which offers comfortable loungers and a bench made from rough-hewn ironwood. Sohamsa Ocean Estate lies at the edge of the Bukit peninsula, a limestone plateau on the delightfully unspoiled southernmost tip of Bali. It rests within an exclusive enclave of luxury villas that line the cliff high above the Indian Ocean – seemingly miles away from the island’s busiest tourist districts yet just half an hour from the airport. While there is little within walking distance in this dramatic rural setting, just two kilometres away is Pandawa Beach with its stretch of white sand, local cafes and sea sports. Hidden beach coves and famed surf breaks are within easy reach, as is the sacred sea temple of Uluwatu, some very cool beach clubs and the restaurants of Jimbaran Bay and Nusa Dua.
