The name pays homage to its location, as bendega means ‘fisherman’ in Balinese (a nod to the peaceful fishing village it sits in) and rato means ‘sunset’ in Maori, which reflects the owners’ New Zealand roots and the gorgeous sunset views from the villa’s rooftop bale. This versatile villa can be rented as a three-bedroom holiday home with the option to add a fourth bedroom in a private walled garden with a plunge pool. Larger groups can also combine Bendega Rato with neighbouring Bendega Nui for a spectacular 9-bedroom space.

The Layout

INDOOR LIVING
Bendega Rato’s main gathering point is the huge open-plan living room with a double-height ceiling and three sets of sliding glass doors that open to the pool and garden. This room has ample seating on teak sofas with plush cushions, elegant teak wood coffee tables, and a dining table that can seat 12 people. Behind the living room there is a modern kitchen equipped with a wood-burning pizza oven and a BBQ. Also adjoining the living room is a media room with a 55-inch TV, Apple TV system, Blue-ray DVD player, and a Sonos sound system.

OUTDOOR LIVING
Guests of Bendega Rato can start the day with an al fresco breakfast next to the pool at the long dining table that can seat up to 10 people. The spacious, open-sided pool pavilion also has antique bar, a large daybed, and plenty of bean bags for lounging. Afternoons are best spent next to the slate-grey pool on a sun lounger or catching rays on the rooftop terrace. Meanwhile, the breezy bale on the rooftop is the perfect spot for sundowner cocktails or a bit of stargazing.

MASTER SUITES
The three master suites at Bendega Rato offer the utmost comfort and serenity with king-sized four poster beds and either a private garden or private terrace. The Garden suite is on the ground floor and has a seating area that overlooks a private garden, an antique daybed that can double as a child’s bed, and a beautiful bathroom with a river rock bathtub set in a koi pond in the middle of a walled garden. The Sea and Sky suites are on the upper floor of the villa and accessed via private walkways. Each has a terrace with views over the rice fields and ensuite bathroom with an oversized tub and rain shower. The Sky suite also has access to the rooftop terrace and bale.

OPTIONAL MASTER SUITE
Bendega Rato has an optional fourth master suite that can sleep two extra people. This stunning hideaway is set in its own private walled garden set apart from the main villa, and it has a plunge pool, sun deck, and poolside bale. The bedroom features a king-sized four-poster bed under a thatched roof, a TV, DVD player, iPod dock, and a minbar. There is also an ensuite bathroom with an open-air soaking tub big enough for two and a rain shower.

Location

Bendega Rato is located in the charming village of Nelayan in Canggu. The black sands of Nelayan Beach are just a five-minute stroll from the villa, and Echo Beach and Batu Bolong Beach are a bit further down the shore. This stretch of coastline is renowned for its excellent surf breaks, as well as its up-and-coming restaurants and cafes. Jump in a car and you can be in central Canggu or Seminyak in 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic. For trips further afield, simply ask the friendly villa staff and they can recommend must-see sights and arrange transportation.
