Off the Tourist Trail in Bali – North Bali

North Bali is often overlooked by tourists, but that’s what makes it so special. If you’re looking for quiet beaches, natural hot springs, waterfalls, and authentic culture, this region offers a peaceful escape from the crowds.

One of the things we love about Bali is that every corner of the island has its own unique vibe. Although many people base themselves in Seminyak, Sanur or Ubud, all it takes is a short (or sometimes not so short) drive to get off the beaten path and see a more authentic and unspoilt side of the island. From secluded beaches to pristine rainforests, quaint mountain villages and historic palaces, we give you our guide to escaping the crowds and exploring Bali from all angles, one area at a time.

Lovina: Dolphin Watching and Relaxation

Lovina has everything you want in a beach town—without the noise. Long stretches of black sand and calm waters create a perfect setting for a relaxing stay. You’ll find plenty of friendly hotels, beachside cafes, and casual bars.

For a morning adventure, hop on a local boat for dolphin watching. Tours usually leave at sunrise and give you the chance to see dolphins in their natural habitat. Afterward, unwind at Banjar Hot Springs, where warm, mineral-rich water flows into beautifully carved stone pools.

Before the day ends, visit Brahmavihara-Arama, the largest Buddhist temple in Bali. With its hilltop views and peaceful gardens, it’s an ideal place to reflect and enjoy the scenery.

Singaraja: Colonial Charm and Sacred Temples

Singaraja, once Bali’s capital, still feels like a city with deep cultural roots. As you walk through the town, you’ll spot Dutch colonial buildings and traditional Chinese shops. The vibe is more local here, and it’s easy to find small eateries serving delicious Balinese and Indonesian food.

Just outside the city, explore Pura Beji in Sangsit. This colorful temple honors Dewi Sri, the rice goddess, and features intricate stone carvings. Nearby, Pura Dalem stands out with its unusual and detailed wall art.

For nature lovers, head to Gitgit Village, only 10 km from Singaraja. Here, three powerful waterfalls cascade through the jungle. The short walk to the falls takes you through lush greenery, making it a refreshing break from the heat.

Pemuteran: Diving and Marine Conservation

Pemuteran, on Bali’s northwest coast, is a hidden paradise for divers and snorkelers. Though it takes time to reach from the south, the journey rewards you with uncrowded beaches and crystal-clear waters.

One major draw is the Biorock Project, the world’s largest coral restoration program. You can snorkel above these growing reefs and witness marine life thrive in this protected zone.

From Pemuteran, take a day trip to Menjangan Island, part of Bali Barat National Park. The island offers some of Bali’s best underwater visibility, colorful coral walls, and vibrant sea creatures. It’s also home to tropical forest trails and peaceful shrines.
