Where to Score a Sweet Surfboard in Bali

Riding the waves can be a full-time occupation in Bali, which means you’re going to need the equipment to feed your daily fixation. Renting boards can really add up over time, so it pays to invest in your own surfboard that you can use for the duration of your stay and take home with you when you go, store in a locker for the next time you’re on the island, or sell to make some of your initial investment money back. Lucky for you, there are plenty of places to pick up a sweet stick on the island of the gods.

Deus Temple of Enthusiasm

Deus excels at making custom surfboards that are hand carved by a team of passionate and dedicated surfers. No matter what size or shape you’re looking for, the Deus team can hook you up with your own personalised board made exactly to your unique specifications. As an added bonus, the surf shop is attached to an ultra-cool restaurant and bar where you can fuel up on tacos, cold beers, coffee and cocktails while listening to cool tunes and waxing lyrical with other like-minded wanderers.

Drifter Surf Shop

For everything surf related including clothing, footwear, eyewear, magazines, books, wax and boards, head to this funky little shop and cafe in the midst of all the Seminyak action on Jalan Oberoi. The owners are two surfers who have lived in Bali for yonks, so they’ve curated a collection of the most creative brands that honour surfing for surfing’s sake. Head to the showroom in the back to peruse row upon row of colourful boards for all types of riders. Once you’ve chosen your stick, you can settle in at Drifter Surf Shop’s cafe for an iced latte amid contemporary artworks and chilled out music.

Rip Curl

For most surfers, Rip Curl is a common household name, and one that was built on the back of over 40 years of solid surfboard production. Today Rip Curl is the biggest surfboard manufacturer in Indonesia, and they have a state-of-the-art factory right here in Bali where you can get custom boards made just for you. If you prefer to buy straight off the rack, the multitude of Rip Curl shops around the island stock boards of all shapes and sizes. And if you want to see your board shaped right before your eyes, head to the new shop on Jalan Legian and marvel at the magic happening in the in-store shaping room.

Soul Surf Project

Want to score a sweet ride, do your part for the environment and help out those in need all at the same time? The Soul Surf Project is Indonesia’s first eco surf shop, and they only sell environmentally minded products and brands. You can grab surf boards made with sustainably grown bamboo, leashes made from recycled plastic and even flip flops and shoes made from reused tire rubber. Plus, all of the profits go towards teaching orphans in Bali how to surf and protect the environment.
