Villa Vajra

3 Bedrooms | Riverside Retreat | Ubud, Bali
from $600 per night

Perched on the edge of a dramatic river valley gorge, Villa Vajra is a dramatic feat of contemporary architecture integrated into the existing contours of the slope as well as the surrounding jungle and rice fields. With a nod to contemporary Balinese aesthetics, this 3-bedroom luxury villa was built with natural materials such as alang alang thatched roofing, coconut wood pillars, teak floors and natural marble and stone walls and bathrooms. In addition, Villa Vajra aims to protect the unique environment and culture of Bali with their organic wastewater garden, organic ingredients used in the menu items whenever possible, energy saving efforts, stunning artworks by local artists, and responsible hiring practices.

The Vibe

The name Villa Vajra comes from Tibetan Buddhism, as a vajra is a symbolic item used in Tibetan rituals to represent the sword of wisdom cutting through ignorance. Renowned international architect Guy Morgan used this concept as the inspiration for the design of Villa Vajra, which is why the villa incorporates unique open spaces that make use of the natural environment, natural local materials and stunning landscaped gardens. The result is an appealing blend of outdoor living and luxurious indoor comfort.

Villa Vajra is located in the traditional Balinese village of Sebali, just a ten-minute drive from the arts and cultural capital of Bali, Ubud. As you drive past emerald green rice fields and multi-tiered Hindu temples, scenes of village life unfold, with women dressed in vibrant ceremonial clothing on their way to the temple, sun-bronzed rice farmers carrying their harvest on their shoulders, and small children laughing and playing along the sides of the road. Eventually, you approach the soaring bamboo gates of Villa Vajra, and enter into a world of tranquility and natural beauty.

The Layout

To get to Villa Varja, you must pass through the bamboo gates and make your way along a raised wooden path that skirts the rice fields. Enter through the wooden door in the wall that surrounds the house, and you are immediately presented with a shimmering lotus pond adorned by a graceful Buddha statue, and a covered walkway dripping in white flowers and vines. On either side of the walkway there are thatched roofed pavilions, with the study on the right, and the master bedroom and a guest bedroom on the left. The second guest bedroom is located below the master bedroom. Each of the bedrooms has polished wooden floors, A/C and fans, telephone lines with IDD and local calling available, and safety deposit boxes located in the storage closets.

Living & Dining Areas
From the upper level, an outdoor cantilevered staircase descends to the vast living and dining area below. The lofty ceiling here is three stories high, and the spacious living room features teak chairs and sofas with plush cushions, a large mahogany dining table and hanging lanterns for ambiance. Attached to the living and dining room is a semi-circular wooden deck that juts out over the Wos River valley. The breezy deck is supported by coconut wood beams and has holes in the floor where jackfruit trees can grow up through the deck. On this level there is also a kitchen where the staff prepare meals, and where guests can store snacks and beverages.

Master Suite
Smooth merbau wooden floors add elegance and warmth to this stunning suite that is open on three sides with sliding glass doors that offer views out over the jungle, river valley and pool. A queen size bed beckons with soft, romantic lighting over the wooden headboard that doubles as a shelf, and the ensuite bathroom gleams with white Palimanan stone floors, a large black terrazzo Jacuzzi, and a shower that opens up to a private garden. There is also a small balcony with cushioned benches that overlooks the waterfall that cascades into the pool and the Wos River valley far below.

Guest Suites
The Valley Suite is directly below the master bedroom, and it features a comfortable queen-sized bed, sliding glass doors that look out over the river valley, a private dressing room with plenty of shelving, and an ensuite garden bathroom designed in black terrazzo with a large bathtub and shower. This bedroom is on the east side of the villa, so it gets soft sunlight in the morning. The Sawah Suite is on the west side of the villa, and it has large glass windows on three sides that overlook the rice fields. This is the smaller of the three rooms, but no less comfortable, with a twin bed and an ensuite bathroom with marble floors, a bathtub and a shower.

Study & Media Room
On the right side of the Lotus pond, you will find a sophisticated, yet comfortable study, which also doubles as a media room. Dark wooden cabinets hold a flat screen TV, DVD player, a sound system that is connected to speakers throughout the villa and the grounds, a large DVD library, books and board games. The large windows surrounding the desk look out over the jungle and the living and dining areas below. This room can also be converted into a bedroom, as it has an ensuite bathroom, a private balcony and plenty of space.

Outdoor Living
Opposite the living and dining pavilion there is an aquamarine swimming pool surrounded by a wooden sundeck with loungers for soaking up the sun. A waterfall cascades gently into the pool, and the inviting Jacuzzi is perfect for drinks under the stars. Below the pool deck, you will find a fully equipped fitness room and a thatched pavilion for relaxing, meditation, yoga or spa treatments.

Location

Villa Vajra is set in an archetypal Balinese village, surrounded by picturesque rice fields and distant mountains.

The villa is a 10 minute drive or majestic 45 minute walk to Ubud, which is the centre of Bali’s famed cultural life and a shopper’s paradise. On top of the many fantastic cafes, fine dining restaurants, boutiques and spas, it offers a wide selection for art lovers. Museums and innumerable art galleries display traditional as well as contemporary work. Each village practices its own art form handed down from generation to generation: painting, stone sculpture, wood carving, weaving, furniture making and silver design. Cultural performances often centring on the Hindu epic ‘The Ramayana’, are frequently staged in the area. The Kecak, Monkey, Legong, Barong and Fire Dances are recognised worldwide.

Ubud is also is a perfect hub from which to visit every corner of Bali. From volcano to sea there are a wide variety of beach and tourist activities and sports. For those who seek excitement in nature, there is a wide range of activities to choose from. The countryside around Sebali is particularly beautiful; an abundance of trails offer memorable walks through peaceful rice fields.

  1. Pure Bliss

I have just returned home after spending our last 4 nights in Bali at Villa Vajra over Nyepi. I now wish we spent all of our time on the island there. The photos of the villa on this website are beautiful but fail to communicate just how special it really is. The accommodations are gorgeous but it is the peace and quiet, the sound of the waterfall by the pool, the meandering garden paths leading down the valley, the fireflies over the stunning rice paddies at night, the sound of the roosters crowing and fog in the valley in the morning and the music that can be heard coming from the nearby temple faintly in the background that make it so magical. I had massages almost daily in the bale which wasn't so bad either! We had day trips planned in and around Ubud but cancelled and decided to just stay at the villa for the majority of our stay. The staff are friendly and attentive although discreet and not in your face the entire time. Gusti the manager never missed a beat recommending great restaurants, booking them for us, arranging beauty treatments and driving us to Ubud centre and also taking us to an Ogah Ogah parade at a village nearby. We mainly ate in the villa and the chef Ketut is very talented with the food very well priced. The owners are lovely and made the time to come over for a chat. They are very interesting people, we enjoyed hearing about life in Bali from their perspective and learnt a lot. They are talented artists and a photographer and we enjoyed seeing some of their work. My family and I have been to Bali more times than we can count and have stayed in many private villas, I had my wedding in one of the most pricey villas on the island but we all agree that Villa Vajra has been our favourite so far. If you are in need of the ultimate rest and relaxation I absolutely recommend staying here.

  1. Beyond magical

From the graciousness of the hosts, the attentiveness of the staff, the luxury of the living accommodation, the refinement of the food, the magical setting- one is hard pressed to find words to capture our experience. We have traveled extensively in Asia, stayed in five star properties, and this Villa outstrips the finest. Hosts Joel and Nigrantha bent over backwards to ensure this was a dream vacation. We can"t wait to come back

  1. Our own Paradise in Ubud

A group of friends and I came to Bali to celebrate my 40th birthday. We stayed four nights at the Villa Vajra in Ubud before moving to another villa in the Bukit Peninsula for three nights. From the moment we arrived, Gusti (the Villa Manager) and the rest of the Villa staff (Made, Ketut, Sabah and Wede) catered for all our needs - they cooked/ ordered for us delicious Balinese and Indonesian food when we wanted to eat in and made recommendations for restaurants in Ubud when we wanted to eat out; helped organise massages and yoga and made recommendations for local cultural events and art and crafts galleries in Ubud; and made us feel right at home at the Villa. The staff at the Villa are highly professional, discreet and full of Balinese warmth. The Villa is beautifully presented with the use of traditional and modern design; all bedrooms and bathrooms are large, comfortable and immaculate; there is a large living/ dining space that opens out completely onto an external patio (where the early morning yoga sessions are held!) and pool area, giving a wonderful sense of space and freedom. There is a meditation/ massage area in the lower level set amidst a beautiful garden. The villa is nestled into rice paddies on one side and sits at the top of a ridge over looking a valley on the other side - it is very private with no other adjacent properties i. Joel and Nigrantha (the owners) live close by in a separate villa across the paddies - they were the most interesting and gracious hosts with two adorable dogs in tow. They told me that most people who come to stay at the Villa Vajra often wish they had booked for a longer stay; how right they are - four nights was not enough to fully appreciate what charms of this Villa. I could not have wished for a more beautiful place to come with my friends.

  1. Paradise on Earth

What is not to like about Villa Vajra? From the location itself, you instantly feel relaxed and at home. On arrival you take a short stroll throughout the rice paddies, next to the temple at the centre of the village and enter the grounds of the most beautiful villa we have ever stayed in. The staff, from the manger Gusti, Made and Ketut the chefs (and I mean chefs - not just cooks), Sabah and Wede looking after us like the family butler and the rest of almost unnoticed staff, not only made us feel at home but also at the same time managed to treat us like the King and Queen of Vajra for the week. Joel and Nirgrantha, as the owners, live next door and more delightful neighbours you could not find. One night they invited us over for pre-dinner drinks and we had an interesting, entertaining and most enjoyable chat. They also have a meditation room and in it you can feel the spirit and the atmosphere. Again, Joel and Nirgrantha, thank you for inviting us into your home. I cannot speak to the surroundings of Villa Vajra, as apart from the car ride in, and then a week later out, we never left the villa. What I can say of Villa Vajra is that you don't need to leave. If you love fine food, in a stunning villa, in beautiful surroundings, serenaded to sleep each night by the gamelan orchestra in the temple next door; then look no further. Will we be back? Planning it already!

  1. R&R Balinese Style

For one week in October we left our frantic jobs in Singapore and entered a world where time slowed down and nature replaced skyscrapers. Our hosts at Villa Vajra provided us with incredible meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner and personalized service whenever we wanted it. We highly recommend Villa Vajra as a wonderful vacation spot. You will love the beautiful gardens, the swimming pool, the friendly staff and the ideal walking paths into Ubud.

  1. Relaxing, Luxurious, and Unique

We were a group of 8 friends, having just come from the beaches of Lombok. Villa Vajra is nestled into a lush jungle and rice field setting. We were astonished at the beauty both surrounding the villa and the balinese and modern designs within the villa itself. We also felt safe with their security, and welcomed by the friendly staff. The food: the staff makes exquisite meals at very reasonable prices. We dined in the open common area, and felt like royalty! Breakfast is a choice of western-style or Balinese...I always went with the Balinese breakfast--delicious! The staff is very helpful in organizing activities and arranging transportation. They also collected our laundry and returned it the next day, fresh and folded, for a very reasonable fee. The rooms were very nice and each one is different. All but 1 have an outdoor style bathrooms. The master bath has a beautiful garden feel and we also had a gecko that lived in ours and ate the bugs! The owner Joel is very friendly, and he came by a few times to visit and he gave us some great restaurant recommendations in Ubud. We also enjoyed the beautiful pool, jacuzzi, lounge area, and the terraced walkways. We wish we could have stayed longer! Perhaps the only recommendation I would make is stronger lighting on the "Villa Vajra" sign from the road. We had a few taxi drivers have trouble finding the villa, and it's easy to pass the turn-in without seeing the sign.

  1. Much needed relaxation

We have lived in Asia for 20 years so this was not our first visit to Bali. We absolutely loved the serenity of this villa. The owners, staff and villa amenities far exceeded our expectations. The food was outstanding and our 4 teenagers were never hungry! One of the delightful things about the villa is you can still walk into Ubud if you want, but you are far enough away to avoid the chaos and traffic of Ubud. A totally relaxing treat and I will most certainly recommend this villa to anyone needing total R&R.

  1. We can't wait to go back!

So many reviews of Villa Vajra mention the word paradise and there is no better way to describe it. We stayed for 11 nights and could have stayed forever. My entire family feel in love with the place and its beautiful, kind and generous staff. I am so thankful to Joel, Gusti and the entire Villa Vajra team for giving our family a holiday we will never forget. We can't wait to get back to you all.
