Villa Umah Tampih

3 Bedrooms | Jungle Masterpiece | Ubud, Bali
from $650 per night

If you’re looking for a unique villa to rent in Ubud that truly steps outside the cookie cutter models of other Balinese villas, look no further than Villa Umah Tampih. Designed by a world-renowned architect, the villa takes its inspiration from the stunning Balinese landscape and the art of origami (the name means ‘house of origami’ in Balinese). Perched high on top of the Kedewatan Ridge, the villa is a masterpiece of asymmetrical lines, natural materials and jaw-dropping views of the steep jungle-clad slopes of the gorge, the Ayung River far below, and the rich tapestry of emerald green rice terraces that spill down the sides of the hill.

The Vibe

As you enter the private gardens of Villa Umah Tampih, the sweet smell of frangipani flowers greets you and stone paths beckon as they make their way past cempaka trees laden in orchids, minimalist stone benches, and the strategically placed walls of the villa, which offer windows and open spaces that allow the stunning views of the ridge and the jungle to peek through at every angle. Here, morning sunlight bathes the wooden decks and the infinity pool in soft golden light, birds chirp cheerfully in the trees, and a sense of complete calm and relaxation permeates throughout.

The Layout

Living Areas
The spacious living room at Villa Umah Tampih is a marvel of modern architecture, with a massive covered area that is open on all sides and looks out in the direction of the river valley for incredible views to the Ayung River below and the jungles and rice fields that blanket the slopes of the gorge. A comfortable and lengthy curved couch can seat an entire family with room to spare, and an intriguing mixed-media piece hangs above the couch in an explosion of colors and textures. The tables and chairs in the living area are made from hollowed out logs and driftwood, creating an appealing juxtaposition with the warm tones of the throw pillows, blankets, and brick wall extensions. On the massive wooden deck, there is a round glass dining table that can seat eight, strategically placed so that it looks out over the river valley. Here, light and air flows in freely, which allows you to appreciate the breathtaking nature around you, yet still be protected from the elements in a comfortable and modern space.

Guest Suites
Each of the 3 luxury bedrooms at Villa Umah Tampih is unique, with attractive variations of modern decor, including striking paintings in vibrant colors, richly patterned bedspreads, and antique furniture and sculptures. The rooms all have floor to ceiling windows that take advantage of the villa’s enviable position atop the gorge, A/C and ceiling fans, and luxurious king-sized beds. The private ensuite bathrooms in each room make use of both indoor and outdoor space, with zen-like outdoor gardens with vine covered walls, rock paths and natural stone countertops and bathtubs. In addition, the rooms offer plenty of storage space and room to move around.

Outdoor Living
Next to the living and dining area, there is a magnificent 25-meter infinity pool made with natural stones that juts out over the ridge and looks as though it spills down into the depths below. The pool is ionized, so no chemicals are used in the water. Wooden decks surround the pool with ergonomic sun loungers for relaxing in the tropical sun. Against the back edge of the pool, there is a wall that boasts a massive wooden sculpture, which adds to the exotic atmosphere of the pool area.

Follow the stone path that snakes its way down the side of the hill, and you will come across the lower gardens, where you will find a peaceful and private wooden bale resting on a mound next to lush tropical bushes and trees. The bale overlooks a patchwork of rice paddies that spread out on along the slopes of the hill below. This is the perfect spot for some quiet contemplation, a romantic sunset cocktail, or a luxurious massage or spa treatment.

Location

Villa Umah Tampih is nestled on a spectacular ridge with views of Mount Batukaru, overlooking a tapestry of rice fields along the Ayung River, the longest river on the island of Bali.

From Kedewatan Ridge the view of the Ayung River valley is breathtaking: a contrast between carefully tended Balinese rice fields and the fast moving, wild river below, between open sky and steep slopes covered by tropical jungle.

Located next to Kedewatan’s Pura Desa (village temple) it is in close proximity to the town of Ubud, known as the cultural and spiritual heart of Bali. The immediate area is rich in offering daily music and dance performances, Balinese Hindu ceremonies, a large selection of cafes, restaurants and boutiques. The villa is 1 hour from Bali’s International Airport.

  1. Incredible Beauty and Serenity

A little slice of heaven, very luxurious, amazing staff. Overlooking a valley, which has a river at the bottom where white water rafting takes place. The natural beauty of this area is only surpassed by the amazing facilities, gorgeous infinity pool, and talented staff. The property is set up for multiple usages, although I stayed alone, there are areas for business meetings and presentations, 3 separate sleeping areas, each with there own bathroom and dressing room. The chef cooked me some of the best meals I have had, and the Nasi Campur was legendary.

  1. Pure Heaven

We have stayed in Umah Tampih for about 3 weeks and from the moment we arrived the experience was incredibly satisfying. The view from the terrace is absolutely breathtaking. You can see the wild nature, rice fields and valley of the nearby river. The modern architecture of the house fits in perfectly. The terrace allows you to feel like you’re part of the nature. The house itself is very beautiful. Each room is having its own view and charm. The infinity pool allows you to enjoy the views and cool down a little. Big advantage of the pool: it is cleaned with ozone. All the details like furnishing are very well thought. The mix of comfort, green views and hospitality of the staff lets you sit in bliss and tranquillity. You almost don’t want to leave. Ever. The staff made us feel at home, we all felt very well taken care of. People were warm, cooked us beautifully served, comforting, fresh food. In the evenings we enjoyed delicious tea from lemongrass freshly hand picked from the garden. It was difficult to say goodbye to all the people maintaining the villa. To us, Umah Tampih is pure heaven.

  1. Sublime

Our 5 week summer stay at Umah Tampih was sublime. The house affords a perfect balance of indoor and outdoor living. It's decorated by the changing moods of the light and the weather and was a serene refuge for we city dwellers. It was difficult to leave the compound, swimming, eating, reading and gazing at the mesmerising view added up to a perfect day... one day after the next. The staff were delightful, taking very good care of us! We can't wait to slip down the driveway and fall under the spell of Umah Tampih once again!

  1. Fabulous

Suffice it to say that, as an architect, this is what it feels like to experience living in a house that belongs in an international caliber architectural magazine. The materials, attention to detail, and spacial experience is second to none. The location is fabulous, and while so close to Ubud all one sees is rice terraces, jungle and the river. Even traffic noise disappears drowned out by the sound of rushing water. So soothing. The service is exemplary, the in-house dinners magnificent, the lap pool was a real pool (not some giant kidney shape tub), and the outdoor covered living space luxurious (as the massage on the deck).

  1. Perfect & Relaxing

I have stayed in Umah Tampih for a couple of days and I have to say that this has been the best villa/hotel I have ever stayed in. The location and view has something spiritual, overlooking the forrest and the rice fields. The open architecture is simply perfect. Every material, every arrangement is so thought through that you enter the property and feel like never leaving again. On top of that, the staff is lovely as well. You feel like being with friends in such a harmonic way, that every stay at Umah Tampih can only be a perfect and so relaxing experience.
