Imagine yourself in a tranquil spot where you are surrounded by nature. The sun shines warmly on tropical flowers and glints off the still waters of lotus ponds, and beyond the coconut and fruit trees you can see the majestic peak of Bali’s most sacred volcano, Mount Agung. As you step out of your private and luxurious bungalow, you make your way under flower covered pergolas past the two swimming pools and into the spacious living area. Here you can enjoy an exquisite meal prepared with fresh organic produce from the garden and the local market, surrounded by spectacular views over the jungle and rice terraces. Welcome to Villa Bayad, a peaceful paradise just 15 minutes north of Ubud, Bali.
Villa Bayad is a masterpiece of traditional Balinese architecture and modern comforts, designed by renowned Southeast Asian architect Popo Danes. The four spacious luxury bedrooms are all separate from the main house and kitchen, and are surrounded by sloping rice terraces, lush jungle greenery, picturesque bridges and breezy bales that are perfect for meditation or relaxation. Two swimming pools allow you to cool off on hot days, and the zen-like spa is sure to put your body, mind and soul at ease. In addition, the friendly staff here are ready to attend to your every need, so you can sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery and utter serenity that Villa Bayad has to offer.
No detail was spared in the design of Villa Bayad, as every effort was made to provide an authentic Balinese experience from the minute guests walk in the traditional gate at the entrance. Throughout the villa you will find natural materials, thatched roofs, batik patterns, plush cushions and local artworks in warm, earthy colors. Each building features floor to ceiling windows and double doors that open to allow the air to flow in and to provide incredible views of the beautiful grounds, epic sunrises and sunsets, and the blue-grey cone of Mount Agung in the distance. In addition, each bedroom was inspired by a different city in Bali, so you get a true sense of the mosaic of culture and arts that abounds on the Island of the Gods.
Step into the main house, and you are immediately struck by the liberating feeling of space and light. Under the soaring cathedral-style ceiling there is a large wooden dining table with cushioned chairs that can seat up to 10 people, a natural stone countertop bar surrounded by wooden chairs and stools, and plenty of seating areas and small tables that are perfect for afternoon tea, cocktails or simply reclining with good company.
Fronting the main house is a large veranda with a natural stone floor that is surrounded by picturesque fish ponds filled with water lilies. On either side of the main house there are also lovely wooden bales that look out over the garden and off to the rice fields beyond. These are ideal spots for sitting back with a good book, or napping in the gentle breezes.
If the weather is less than ideal, head indoors to the media room/library where you will find comfy rattan chairs and state-of-the-art audio and video equipment. There is also a lovely guest bathroom in the main house for convenience.
Named after the Bali Aga village on the east coast of Bali, this is the largest bedroom, and it stands on columns overlooking the main pool and the lower garden. Inside you will find a queen-sized bed, massive walk-in closet and a gorgeous bathroom with natural stone tiles. Tenganan House is also directly connected to the spa area, which is an breezy walled space covered by a traditional bale that sits in the middle of a tranquil koi pond.
Klung Kung House
This guest room is closest to the main house and also attached to the spa area. The house was named after the royal city of Klung Kung in the east of Bali, and it features a queen-sized bed with a mattress that can be divided if needed, a walk-in closet, and an attractive bathroom that is partly open, yet still private. The views of the rice terraces here from the private bale that sits amid a private water garden are simply spectacular.
Taking its inspiration from Bali’s arts and cultural center of Ubud, it should come as no surprise that Ubud House offers unique decor, including the distinctive black and white checked cloth that represents the balance of good and evil in Balinese culture. This room has polished hardwood floors, a queen-sized bed with divisible mattresses, and a small walled garden with an open-air shower so you can let both the cool water and breezes flow over you at the same time.
Singaraja House is a peaceful sanctuary with gleaming hardwood floors, a queen-sized bed with an intricately carved stone bas-relief overhead, a spotless bathroom decked out in turquoise terrazzo tiles, and a private walled garden with an open-air shower. As an added bonus, Singaraja House and Ubud House share a private fully equipped kitchen and dining bale and an enticing spring water fed plunge pool and pool deck.
One of the most pleasant aspects of Villa Bayad is the lovely landscaped property that offers surprises around every corner. Wander along the stone paths that make their way past lush tropical foliage, and you will come across fertile fruit trees, the organic vegetable and herb garden and pretty ponds. The Sunrise Bridge spans a small canyon filled with rocks, waterfalls and lily ponds, making this a great spot for some yoga, meditation or sunset drinks.
Stop by the main pool for a dip in the fresh spring water or bask in the sun on the ironwood deck. Next to the pool deck there is a Teriyaki grill with table and chairs for snacks and meals outdoors by the pool. For those looking to stay fit on holiday, there is also a fully equipped and air-conditioned gym and mountain bikes for rent. And if its pampering and rejuvenation you’re after, the spa is an alluring open courtyard in the middle of a koi pond with a comfortable massage table, natural stone bathtub and waterfall shower.
